Quite a few years ago, I decided to hit the Goodwill near my
office during my lunch break. As I
waited in line, the customer in front of me was having an argument with the
cashier wanting a better price for an item and the cashier held her ground
telling her that it was $13.99 as is. I
just remember the customer throwing the Louis Vuitton Speedy at the cashier, “you
expect me to pay that much money for a bag with a broken zipper! Do you know
how much a replacement will cost!” As
the lady stormed out of the store leaving behind an authentic 1980’s LV Speedy
30 handbag, I asked the cashier if I could look at it.
“Do you think it’s real?” The cashier asked?
At the time my authentication skills were non-existent, but
I looked at the handles on the bag and they looked like real leather.“I don’t know, but for $13.99 I will take my
chances, it’s a nice bag,” I said.
That day, I might have put my work on hold while I scoured dozens
of authentication posts and videos and after an extensive search I concluded that
what I had in my possession was indeed the real deal. Now, I was not the type
to spend $1550 on a handbag, but that’s what I now had in possession - my first
designer find! Now, my bag is used and
has the patina to prove it. The dates on
the inside show that it was made in the 1980’s and it does have a broken zipper,
but even so if I wanted to sell it I could be looking at three plus hundred
dollars profit.I don’t mind the zipper
being broken as it doesn’t prohibit it’s use and if I was more organized I
would probably have already gotten the zip replaced. However, I like my bag I have it out in my room
as a display piece because it makes me happy to remember how I got into
thrifting designer pieces.
